Permaculture, ecological farming, is the art and science of optimizing and transforming landscapes for maximum life.
Ancient civilizations have practiced permaculture for ages only to have this knowledge swept away by the industrial revolution and likes of Monsanto. Permaculture is the revival of ecological farming in our times and it is spreading across the world. First in small enclaves and private farms and soon to cover the globe.
If you have ever played a strategy game like Sim City, Civilization or Harvest Moon you already have an idea of what Permaculture is, the best way or organize your village. Where to put the ponds, trees, animals , homes in a way that maximizes the good and minimizes the bad.
One of it’s greatest champions is Sepp Holtzer. A soft spoken fellow from the Austrian mountains. Called a Rebel Farmer, heavily fined and even threatened with imprisonment, he continues to show the world what farming should be.
- Not pruning fruit trees, increases their ability to withstand high altitudes and harsh climates
- Using ponds as solar reflectors to increase energy gain of solar arrays
- Using rock outcroppings to increase the hardiness of nearby plants
- Using animals to do work in a cooperative way. for example throwing corn on the floor and letting pigs dig ditches naturally and safely for all.
Sepp’s forty five hecacre alpine farm is considered to be the world’s finest example of ecological farming and people come from all over the world to study it and learn from Sepp. He has transformed a frozen forrest into a lush wonderland. There is even a full length documentary made about him, The Agro Rebel.
A student of Bill Mollison, the godfather of permaculture, Geoff has introduced permaculture to millions. His incredible gift for explaining things simply makes him the very best person to introduce us to why permaculture is so important and so powerful.
Geoff does sell videos but the funds all go towards jumpstarting other people’s permaculture projects. A most worthy cause and a most honorable champion of nature.
The founder of permaculture started the entire movement in the 60’s. Since he began it all permaculture had spread to over forty countries. Bill see’s permaculture as philosophy, science and a way of life. Bill plants over a thousand tree’s ever year and he has shown three generations how to live a better way.
Few people have planted as many tree’s as Bill Mollison. He plants thousands of tree’s a year and continues to inspire others to do the same.
