John Joseph Thomson was more than a brilliant researcher he was also one of our greatest teachers.
- Getting into college at 14
- Discovering the Electron, which he called a “corpuscle of the aether”
- Discovering the relation between inertia and electricity.
- Winning a Noble Prize
- His son and all seven of his research assistants won Nobel prizes
As you read his books you will come to see just why he is such a great teacher. His writing style is clear and without the pomp of most of the Europeans of the time. He goes deeply into how he proved his conclusions and why he thought the method of experimentation was best.
JJ Thomson was a true experimenter and his mind was developed into a truly keep scientific instrument. We must study his works as even more precious than the knowledge it gives us is the process of experimentation it imparts to us.
